| Finding a job in Dublin |
|
Current economic situation Compared to few years ago, in the middle of the Celtic Tiger boom, nowadays the situation is completely different. Ireland's economy is in slight recovery from a very deep recession caused by the property market crash and the global market slump. After a deep fall from 2008 to 2010, the GDP (Gross Domestic Product) rose by 1.3% in the first half of 2011. However the unemployment rate is very high (around 14%) and finding a job might take even 3/4 months or more. Therefore it's extremely important to be prepared. It's absolutely wrong to think that it's going to be easy to find a job in Dublin. Dublin is a cosmopolitan city and the competion for jobs is very high. However, many multinational Companies are based here (Google, Facebook, eBay, Amazon etc) and there are many good opportunities in the following sectors: - sales The other good news is that many of the above-mentioned multinational companies are looking for people who speak foreign languages. Yes, your native language! If you are french/italian/spanish or other European languages, you might find something that suits you and the Company. What you need A good CV is the first step. Make sure that you get a CV professionally translated. If your CV has mistakes or poorly translated, it does not make a good impression and you can miss the opportunity to be called for an interview. For this reason, VivaHouse Dublin offers CV translation service. A fluent English is essential. Don't forget that you have to substain an interview in English and therefore you should be prepared to respond quickly and effectively to some tough questions. If you make a good impression at your interviews, you are half-way through.
In general, the following channels are the most popular: 1. Websites However it's a very popular practice in the anglio-saxons countries, we do not recommend you to print hundreds of CV and search around the pubs/restaurants because the chances to find a job are limited compared to the time that you spend on moving around every place. In general, never reject the first offer if you think that does't meet your skill/experience. It's always good to start with a job and then, when you get more confident in your experience and English level, you can keep searching a better job. Remember that Companies tend to hire employed people rather than unemployed because that it's a good sign of commitment. We wish you good luck! |
